Schoeni Art Gallery is proud to present Time: As Quick As An Arrow, joint exhibition by emerging young talents, Zheng Jiang and Fu Ying Ying. Having both graduated from the Masters Degree at the renowned Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2010 under the tutelage of one of China’s greatest contemporary artists, Liu Xiao Dong; Zheng Jiang and Fu Ying Ying are becoming active and much observed members of the Chinese contemporary art scene. In fact, Fu and Zheng are close friends who have shared the same art studio during their final year at the Central Academy of Fine Arts. Though predominantly different in style, technique and content, their works are captivating and possess a unique quality in relation to the time-space phenomena. Time: As Quick As An Arrow is not only an exhibition that reveals the vanishing nature of time, but at the same time also resonates and challenges the mysterious directionality and dimensionality of time, taking its audience through a world that transcends the past, the present and the future.
A native of China’s Hebei Province, Fu Ying Ying was born in 1983 and graduated from her undergraduate degree at the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in 2006. She then obtained her Master’s degree at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2010 and has received numerous prizes along with works being collected by institutions such as the Central Academy of Fine Arts and Today Art Museum. Fu’s works mainly consist of a combination of pencil drawings and oil painting on canvas and her portrayals are often based on her everyday life experiences. Almost all the themes depicted by Fu are based on her life on campus, while being an avid swimmer herself swimming scenes often take centre stage in her works. The marked contrast between the coloured and the black & white creates an alarming juxtaposition of the different phases in time. The cracking intrusion of the penciled plants into the crystal like imagery of Fu’s oeuvre strikes a symmetrical balance within the composition while achieving a sense of frozen reality and stillness of time.
Zheng Jiang participated in Schoeni Art Gallery’s Niubi Newbie Kids II exhibition in 2009. Born in 1980, Zheng obtained both his undergraduate and postgraduate degree from Beijing’s Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2007 and 2010 respectively. Zheng is highly notable for his maturity as well as meticulous and painstaking details seen in his artwork. Zheng Jiang recent pieces are a continuation to his Sudden Ego Series, which was exhibited at the Niubi Newbie Kids II exhibition. Instead of painting on glass like in his previous Sudden Ego Series, Zheng has chosen to portray objects through patterned glass windows that were widely used in China during the 80’s, creating an overall nostalgic atmosphere and also a direct connection to the artist’s own past. However, the blurred imagery also produces a mysterious effect, yet at the same time manages to trigger one’s imagination. Challenging the usual norm of "distance vision", the artist plays wittily with visual effect, making the depicted subject appear more clear when looked at from a distance and less evident from a closer distance. Zheng Jiang’s art remarkably captures a timeless space for viewers to ponder.
