Asia Society in Hong Kong May Events
In celebration of the first Hong Kong edition of Art Basel, Asia Society in Hong Kong will open exhibition Light before Dawn: Unofficial Chinese Art 1974 - 1985 on 15 May 2013, showcasing an impressive spectrum of more than one hundred works by China's most influential contemporaryartists. This show will continue till 1 September 2013. On 20 May 2013, Asia Society's Inaugural Art Gala will gather major art collectors from the region, artists, galleries and dignitaries from the art world to honour Lee Ufan, Nyoman Masriadi and Zeng Fanzhi fortheir significant contributions to Asia contemporary art. We particularly look forward to the documentary screening of Hometown Boy on 24 May, which recounts the visit of acclaimed contemporary Chinese artist Liu Xiaodong to his hometown of Jincheng. We also recommend attending one of their evening or lunch discussions throughout the month.

In the first edition of Art Basel in Hong Kong, our booth (3D16) will be showing Dao x Microcosmic Play and Appreciation (2013), a large interactive work by Hong Kong artist Hung Keung. The work is the marriage of two of the most complex projects Hung Keung has developed in the past decade: Dao Gives Birth to One (2009 - 2012) and Microcosmic Play and Appreciation (2013).

This two-person exhibition shows the latest works by the winners from Fresh Trend 2012 Art Graduates Joint Exhibition - Anki Kwan Yin Lau and Dorothy Mei Ling Ding. As Lau reflected on her personal experiences as a fresh university graduate, Ding draw inspirations from natural phenomena in the latest additions of the Song of Clay series. The annual charity fundraiser of Vision First will see the auction of an Untitled 2009 Series No. 6 print by Chen Yu. Vision First is a non-profit organisation in Hong Kong committed to provide best support for local refugees. Services including the provision of basic needs (food, shelter and medication), advocacy, counseling, vocational training and long- term accommodation.

Curated by Professor Pi Daojian, 'The Origin of Dao' is the final leg of the 'Hong Kong Art: Open Dialogue' exhibition series. Works by more than 30 Chinese artists around the world will be shown, one of which being the award-winning digital video installation Dao Gives Birth to One (version III, 2009) by Hung Keung. In conjunction with this exhibition, a two-day international symposium will be held to discuss the practice and discourse of Chinese traditional art medium in contemporary art.

The first retrospective exhibition of Hung Keung will feature five of the artist's most acclaimed short video works between 1997 and 2007, providing an overview of his artistic progression over the decade, as well as the inspiration and conception behind each of the works. All works (with the exception of CD ROM: Human Being and Moving Images) has been reworked by Hung Keung and will be presented in a new HD Digital version for the purpose of this exhibition. We welcome you to join us in this exhibition opening.
